Wanstead
Wanstead

Place where working-class folk with a bit of cash crash for proximity to central London?

Aspiring Essex sorts who wanted out of Ilford?

Faux gentrified ‘island’ with one expensive butcher and a motorway through the middle?

Or none of the above because we’re all reductionist cunts on WHO and stereotype everything?

You'll see me in Wanstead near enough daily. I usually bowl up there with some cans of Perla from where I live in Leytonstone. Was in the George yesterday for a Tsingtao. Banginibg little Ruby outside Marks and Spencer.

Re: Wanstead
I first started going in the Wanstead George before witherspoons took it over.

It was a bit of a dive then. There was apparently a knocking shop upstairs in the 60’s/70s according to my mate’s dad.

Didn’t ask how he knew that.

Used to be a decent Oirish night in the Nightingale when Noel owned it. Not been in there since Frank snr took it over and had heard it’s full of arse kissing wankers in there these days?

Re: Wanstead
Being a Stepney boy, when we was kids we used to fuck about up and down on buses (no.10)and end up in Wanstead. Seemed miles away.
Then a mate, who’s family had a big boozer in Stepney, moved there and we thought “fuckin el, they must be rich”.
When we, somehow, moved here a good few years ago now, it was like the country, never seen so much green, trees etc. (There was even a cow (Brady?) wandering the streets one day (they used to be over Wanstead flats. I’m sure most of us ave slid through a cow pat when playing football over there in our youth!)

It was a right snobby manor and I had many a row with shop owners taking the piss with their prices and neighbours moaning about noise etc. (Still used to use our chinky in stepney).
Didn’t really appreciate how pukka Wanstead was.
Can only echo what most others have said:
Its in touch with everything (good schools, central line, A406/M11 (Stanstead), quality high road and boozers, restaurants, cafes, shops and the pie mash topped it all off. (even that’s not hectic!)
Was/ is easy to get over the old ground and the new dump).
And, on the whole, it’s held it’s own over the years and mainly stayed a decent area.

Still ave a starter for ten in the George before a game sometimes.
And it’s still got an East London postcode, though you wouldn’t believe it sometimes.

So if I’m not in the george on a matchday, you’ll find me and the family in that 4-berth tent on the Green!

I was in Wanstead last night, loads of smart new restaurants on the high street.

Used to enjoy going in The Cuckfield straight after football, then over to Russells wine bar. Good times.

Can’t agree with that. Christ Church Green is a well kept pleasant place to rest for while. What do you think is rank about it?

The flats are good, and Wanstead Park. The park on the High St is pretty rank nowadays though.
